All depends on your business plan and and your long-term goals. One is either building a brand around a URL or seeking a URL to enhance an existing brand. Clearly the Nissan Z [ z.com ] made sense for this high-end, high-profit automobile. AA.com serves American Airlines very well; I use it all the time. And this is particularly important to companies who are used to doing most of their advertising in print or on television or radio - z.com is a lot easier to remember...
Certainly the 'X' for paypal.com was a poor buying decision if they paid big for it, but maybe they were thinking "transactions" or something at the time...
b.com would be a great URL for a business site or boob affiliate program...just have to use your imagination, and of course determine if the outlay is justified in terms of expected returns...
