sometimes animals have to be shaved - for surgery, sometimes they also lose their fur from different diseases/conditions - my dog lost a huge patch on her back once - turned out to be some metabolic disorder, hair grew back when she was treated for it. i doubt there is anything bad that would happen if you shaved or trimmed a domestic cat - other than they wouldn't be able to go outside in winter for long.
