simple start for you would be

switch to diet drinks (if you drink soda, juices, etc), use something with splenda

switch to whole wheat breads and basmati or brown rice

dont eat candy

no carbs after 7pm (or approx 3 hours before you go to bed)

get comfortable with that, you'll lose some lbs from the diet change alone
