generally, yeah. unless you're going to go a very simplistic route and you're focusing on weight loss through diet and cardiovascular workouts (you can do cardio workouts anywhere, without equipment. running is a good example)
of course it's always a positive to have access to all that equipment, as resistance training can significantly "aid" in the process of losing fat.. through building muscle, you're raising your metabolism which = more fat burned.
although it's not an absolute necessity to lose fat.
but if your primary goal is building muscle, having access to a gym is a must unless you have a lot of freeweights in your home.
