I couldn't really care less about justice or revenge: punishment for crime should simply be a way to prevent someone from offending again and as a deterrent to others. And far more emphasis should be placed on the rights of the victim than on the rights of the accused.
But in the US at least, there isn't a whole lot of point talking about punishment when the legal system by and large only works well for those who can afford it. Nor so long as, even if the process is frequently pointless, it can take years to get through a trial and the subsequent appeals.
