i'm from alaska... and its more like "camping above the article circle" not "camping". polar bears are typically very agressive and they are a big problem in many place because they come into towns like barrow and others, roam the streets, eat dogs etc... so wherever this happened, it wasn't like these people didn't know the risks. polar bears tend to be more curious and agressive than other types of bears in alaska.
from my experience, usually these cases are hippy scientists trying to make the world a better place and believing in all thats good and wonderful that had their utopianistic views of life and nature shattered by the shock and horror of finding out the hard way that predators are predators. (the pics look like natives though - probably even from russia)
my dad (also a brown bear guide) best friends father shot the last legally hunted polar bear in the US, i believe.
