The actress playing Lolita was actually like 21 when the movie was shot (I had the exact same thought as you, so I looked it up).
Personally, I thought the ending was pretty good. It leaves you guessing (just as he is), and raises some interesting thoughts. For example, with his implied history, he could well have more children. Having never settled down, his whole connection to the world is ambiguous - he has no idea of how his actions throughout his life have affected others.
