ASC - in short it is very important.
If you want the long answer... heheh here it is.
Seeing that this industry's meeting place is online, the very 'first impression' you'll have on anyone is on boards - chat - phone....way before you'll ever meet them in person (if you ever do). Now granted that not everyone is your potential client/affiliate/boss ... leaving a good impression or at least, not a bad one, will be beneficial to you - moreso if your livelihood depends on/or will depend on it in the future since someone may actually know someone for you to meet.

I'm like shap, I read a lot of what is said and see how interesting people get when in the line of fire or how they'll come out both barrels blazing and shooting from the hip - it says a lot about the person. 'Board persona' or not, if you can't control yourself when you have the time to reflect before pressing 'send' then who knows what will shoot out of your mouth in a face-to-face meeting or how you can jeopardize a deal if you feel in the least bit attacked or are unprepared.

In my opinion, if your market isn't on the boards and your livelihood doesn't depend on the mass perception of you, then it shouldn't matter to you. It does to me - and this goes for the board only.
