I'll just answer your 2nd question: Yes, I'd try with a few programs first and see what works for you. If you are going to use a "live" banner (iframe, etc.) perhaps drop in some code rotate the sponsors?
You can then track through the sponsors which is doing the best for you.

Just an idea.
