Black Jack Town Orders Couple To Get Married Or Move

Kansas City, MO (AHN) - A couple sues the town of Black Jack, Missouri after the town orders them to get married or move.
The petition says an ordinance prohibiting more than three people from living together if they are not related by blood, marriage or adoption is unconstitutional.
Olivia Shelltrack and Fondray Loving and their children moved into a five-bedroom home they had bought in the town earlier this year.
The couple have been living together for about 13 years, and have two children. Shelltrack has a 15-year-old daughter from a former relationship.
The complaint says Black Jack officials refused to give the family an occupancy permit for their home because they did not meet the city's definition of "family."
Tony Rothert, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri, says the city has threatened to fine the couple up to $500 a day.
Brenda Jones, executive director of the ACLU of Eastern Missouri, which is representing the family in the lawsuit, tells Reuters, "The city of Black Jack's behavior is both pompous and unconstitutional... Black Jack's attempt to criminals people's choice to live together as a family has earned international ridicule for Missouri."
