That's what makes it more entertaining. The actor who played Bennet (Vernon Wells) did a pretty bad job of portraying a bad guy, particularly his last few lines where he goes psycho...
I can kill you John! I can beat you, I don't need the girl!
The chainmail shirt was an added bonus.
It's probably intentional, the movie isn't supposed to be taken seriously. That's why it's so good.
