Churches wanting cash machines?

Fast cash at churches?

A senior clergyman says churches should have cash machines.

Archdeacon of Lincoln the Venerable Arthur Hawes said the machines would be a service to the community by churches.

According to the Mirror he said: "People in rural parts have to travel long distances to get cash, which costs them money.

"So why not put a cash machine somewhere handy, like in a church?"

The proposal had not been opposed by parishioners.

Canon Chris Sugden, of the Anglican Mainstream group, backed the idea.

He said: "With the withdrawal of banks and post offices in rural areas, it is appropriate that churches, as community buildings should be available for services of this kind."

A Church of England spokesman said permission would be needed from each local diocese.
