It is not unusual at all for aircraft on landing to be spaced less than 3 miles apart. the tricky part is for the second aircraft to land beyond the touchdown point of the first aircraft to avoid getting tossed by wake turbulence. I fly a small airplane into a busy airport and on clear days you'll have 747's cutting in from the side and landing right in front of you at less than 2 miles.
