Although many of the "facts" that religions are based on may be scientifically/historically/archaeologically be proven to be false or exaggerated, no one can argue that the core psychological needs that religion fills are "hard wired" in human beings. These needs are 1) the need for meaning and purpose 2) the need for continuity with the past and [after death] the future. This is what forms the core of spirituality. You can fill it with religion...or if you're an atheist, fill it with philosophy. But these needs persist and they are part of what makes us human.

What irritates me is when people attack spiritual needs on their way to attack religion. This strikes me as irrational and ignorant of human nature. They should spill the wine, but leave the bottle alone.
