The prefect did not believe Jesus to be guilty of any crime, and gave a jewish crowd the choice whether Jesus or a convicted murderer should be set free, believing they would choose Jesus. The crowd, however, spurred on by the jewish elders, chose to set the murderer free, Pilate (the prefect) washed his hands, then had Jesus crucified.
