For those who dont want to pay for a history/theological/religion degree one of the best books you can pick up is Holy Blood Holy Grail. There are others just cant think of them right now of the top of my head.

I do know how the bible evolved, and I have absolutely no faith whatsoever in it... which kinda comes with not believing in supernatural beings.
I agree with you that Rome, among other things, strongly influenced the bible. However, I can not agree with the term "corruption" of the bible. All contemporary religions evolved through long processes in which they were constantly adapted to suit political needs of the time, included beliefs from other religions and traditions, or were just interpreted in a certain way over another, possibly equally (in)valid way.
Religion, like tradition in general, is both a part and a product of culture. There is no real truth hiding behind it somewhere, it is just a collection of superstitions, folklore and culturally determined morality.
