The education standard of those who fight was never really the point - neither was their beliefs or their ability to be butchers as a trade.
The difference between a "regular army" is in it's "niceness" and claimed legality. They are armed with sophisticated weaponary and ordered by - presumably a higher being - to go out and kill. When they go out and kill - they often do it on a mass scale - example the US killings in Iraq totalling around 34,000 or possibly more. But, they are never "butchers" - they do most of the butchery at a safe distance.
The "other side" you mention have no sophisticated weaponary, have been oppressed for decades, saw they families and those of their friends be abused, blow to hell and generally confined to ghettos. They may feel they have more than just cause - whether that is in revenge or attacking those who have inflicted oppression on their people for decades. When they go out and kill - they use small quantities of rockets and blow themselves up etc, but for some reason, this makes them "evil" and "cowards". Mmmm.
Bottom line? This is little difference - tho one has a larger capacity to kill than the other, but each have their reasons.
