It's uncomfortable to admit, but it's true--most people compete (or measure themselves) based on what they see others do/what others take value in. Sure, some measure their success based on their own personal past performance, but for the most part success is defined by others outside of yourself. From our parents to our neighbor to our girlfriend/wife/boyfriend/whatever, a major part of our identity and worldview is influenced by and colored by those around us.
