CDSmith comes off as one of the smarter people on this board. I haven't read much of what he was written on the Israel/Lebanon situation, but based on his other posts I know he's not stupid. He's got a good head on his soldiers.

Also too stupid to comment on, but I can't help myself. Canada is a sovereign nation that has many trade partners outside of the USA. If we were to stop taking their resources, China would do it with a smile. Japan would love Canadas oil. And both would probably pay them more than we do. In many ways their economy is stronger than ours. They consistantly have budget surplusses year after year (until they elected a "conservative, now that's going to end), yet they still manage to have universal health care and a very strong pension program.
