I know this is a minority opinion, but I don't think enough civilians have been killed. Both sides have become accustomed, and perhaps even comfortable,
with the ongoing state of low intensity conflict. There's just enough killing to keep both sides mad at the other, but not enough that either side feels compelled to compromise enough to settle their differences.
On the surface it might sound more compassionate to condemn the killing and to call for a ceasefire but that's very shortsighted. A ceasefire that's imposed by the international community would merely allow both sides a chance to rest, re-arm and prepare for the next round; it wouldn't affect the underlying causes of the hostility.
Is it better to spend decades living under the constant threat of attack, where entire generations grow up who know nothing of peace and feel a deep hatred for the "enemy"? Or is a short brutal war better, where both sides come to realize that the costs are far to great to continue?
