My late granfather would qualify as "hero" to me. I put very few people on such a pedestal, but he definitely fit the bill. He fought in WW I, took 5 pieces of shrapnel to his chest during the battle of Vimy Ridge, lived well into his 80's with one piece of shrapnel right next to his heart. He worked as a town cop for many years in N. Ontario and had a very storied career, quit the cig habit cold turkey after nearly 50 years of smoking (he had 3 cartons of cigs in the kitchen cupboard, but when he decided to quit that was that) --- I admire that kind of decisiveness and resolve and strength of will.
I could write novels about his life.
