Hmm, I have a feeling this is one of those topics that I should waste my time on. It's too easy to stereotype the American gun ownership and too easy to point to statistics that can have a certain skewed aspect to them.

Each state has it's own rules on gun ownership, some states are very easy to possess and own guns, while other states have pretty stringent regulations on the topic. Now you would think that the statistics in the states that have loose gun regulations would be the states that had the most violent crime, but it's just not the case.

Vermont has one of the most liberal gunlaws out of all 50 states. Anyone can carry a concealed weapon, there's very loose regulations on the topic, yet it's one of the safest states to live in with one of the lowest crime rates. Also if you look at the low crime states, they all have fairly relaxed gun laws.

Also, there are countries with very loose gun regulations, Switzerland, Israel, Finland, etc, and they all have relatively low crime rates (there's some other countries in the mix as well, but I can't remember them off the top of my head). So, gun ownership doesn't necessarily mean an increase in violence and jumping to that conclusion is essentially flawed.

As with anything though, stupid people, do stupid things. Every year 40,000 people are killed in car accidents here, 3.2 million are injured...maybe we should ban cars as well? lol.

Why do Americans have weapons? We're a country born from revolution, it's in our Bill of Rights, and part of our history / heritage. When the government for whatever reason can't protect us, we protect ourselves, and it's a tradition more or less that's followed since the revolution, the expansion westward, etc.

Also, there is a thing regarding marksmanship as a sport. Personally I like old weapons, so I do have a recursive bow I like to use for target practice, and I do also throw knives for target practice as well (basically like darts only with a knife, lol).

One final thing, I don't own a gun, so my view on this topic isn't because of a vested self interest.
