There are many patents and yes, sadly some are owned by oil companies.
Back in the 70's in Australia, an engineer made a car that converted his car to run on hydrogen gas extracted from water. Did so for years and had many tests on the validity of the invention.
Shell I believe purchased the system for $1 million. A lot of money for those days. Guess what, the invention will never surface again and what companies are wanting you to drive to a pump and fill up with hydrogen gas. They are doing this because they know they are on a beating to nothing if someone develops a self generating hydrogen car.
The US Govt has just sunk over $1 billion into an invention, but think logically, a huge percentage of the Governments revenue comes from tax on oil. How are they going to replace this money?
So, unless someone comes up with a viable convertor for your car (I believe someone is doing it and it will be massed produced by 2008) you will still be fucked by high costs to run your car and transport.
