Does your friend know according to islamic law sharia... he must die. One cannot be a man without god .... hence why during the soviet of afghanistan that every radical muslim showed up to fight .. because they were fighting a ideal and government that advocated athieism as a state religion. that doesn't sit well with islam.
Second thing.. a person who is muslim cannot undo that..
once your a muslim always a muslim. To change religion from islam results in death.. recall the afghani that wanted to convert to christianity? he was sentenced to death by the courts system and required alsylum to another nation to save his life.
when i lived in saudi arabia.. several of my translators never when to pray during the day.. and failed to practise other aspects of the islamic life.. well they were visited by the religious police weekly till they went to prayer daily... one in fact .. kinda disappeared for a week... while undergoing religious education.
its a complex religion with complex rules... insight is needed to understand.
