I don't see that as true. More than 150 million people died in the conflicts and atrocities of the past century. For the most part, the US sat on the sidelines of most events- such as when Soviet tanks rolled into eastern europe and stayed there until the end of the Cold War.
The US does what is perceived as its best interest at the time.
