If you have a good private teacher and take diary classes , in 6 months you'll be able to defend yourself ALTROUGH Portuguese is quite complicated ; gramatically speaking is similar to German : lots and lots of rules, many of them doing no sense at all...

The mainly problem is the vocabulary ; Brazil has a very mixed population so you have lots of words that came from Africans, Europeans, Japaneses, etc...etc...
