I think it's a learned human response over years of brainwashing by what society deems 'right' and 'acceptable' when it comes to human nature. I believe that human beings are far more capable than we give ourselves credit for. If we can grow out of our infancy stage and start working together rather than killing each other over whose god wears the shinier hat, I honestly believe that there is no limit to our success as a species. I have not gotten sad at seeing a person die in quite sometime... last time I remember getting 'sad' was during a school shooting in which two people I knew died, and it wasn't sadness from their lives ending, it was sadness that not even school is a refuge from the screwed up society that we live in.
