I think you nailed part of the problem on the head. The mainstream media wants to anoint one supposed leader for a particular demographic while ignoring the diversity of opinion within communities. The African American community is very diverse and not everyone subscribes to the played out and tired "Civil Rights" holdover philosophy espoused by Jackson and Sharpton. This Old School is very afraid of the rise of conservatism and political diversity in the black community--that is why you have Collin Powell basically being called an Uncle Tom or "house slave" by Henry Belafonte as well as being insulted directly by Amiri Baraka.
There is so much diversity within black political thought [McWhorter to Steele to JC Watts, etc] that assuming that old tired lefties like Jesse "Baby Momma Drama" Jackson or Minister Farrakhan leads them is perposterous and probably racial typecasting.
