Sex is the most intrusive of several things which are part of our genetic inheritance and remind us that we are basically just another species of animal. That we do not like such reminders is evidenced by the way we regularly convince ourselves that we are making decisions, when our behavior is in fact entirely instinctive. One of the most interesting books on this topic is "The Human Zoo", by Desmond Morris, in which he demonstrates how we even share much of our body language with other species.
Thus fundamentally we are all uncomfortable with sex, whether we are prudish or claim to be open-minded. Both are ways of acting as if we are in control, rather than driven by genetic imperatives.
