6 but I need more (probably 8) and I catch up on weekends by sleeping in. The average person requires 8 hours of sleep to function optimally - lots of people get less and are always exhausted; some people need more but feel they're ok without it but studies show that they're not as productive or as fast on mental tasks. But, there are lots of people that function perfectly on less, like 4 hours.
I think there is one person recorded that only needed 1 hour of sleep. I think it was a woman and she would just stay up all night reading because nobody else was up with her. I think they found that her brain got as much REM sleep in 1 hour as most of us do in 8 hours. I don't remember the details.
