Sadly it does spoil it - but if this is true - France should simply let it go and be happy with 2nd place and their hero shamed.

Actually they were showing the officials positions on the field and sidelines during the play right after it happened and even commented that none of the officials could have seen it since they were following the play down the field. It wasn't until after the replays were shown on the monitors in the stadium that one of the officials claimed to have seen it.
It was a good call based on Zidane's actions, but a bad call based on the rules of the game that don't allow for carding based on video replay.
