Nobody I have ever had sex with has called me a slut as a bad name. Maybe people who I've never fucked have called me that name, but how would they know? I keep my affairs private.
I think for most people, it's just another derogatory term, like bitch, c*nt, asshole, et cetera. The fact that a person reacts to the insult is the problem -- it makes people believe there is something to the story and encourages them to use it again.
But I like to think of slut as a term of endearment, said between lovers to tease each other about their lust for each other. If only the haters would let us keep this word as a happy, respectful one! *sigh*
