You are making this too hard. I do LANs and WANs for a livng...go to Best Buy and buy a cheap 10/100 ethernet card and install it into one of your expansion slots. Install the driver that comes with the card, stick your RJ45 jack in, and you are off and running.
Those all in one cards are pieces of shit anyway, this will give you alot more flexibility.
I am a MCSE 2000 guy, and if were me, I would put the XP back on the computer, change my files to NTFS, it is twice the operating system that win98 it...no more fucked FAT tables that make it a crashing dog.
Just buy a cheap 10/100 card... should be about fifteen bucks and your are set...your computer will detect it right away, since it is plug n play and your problems will be over.
