Do what ya gotta. If it were me, I think I'd go for the improvements. What would be the down side? The other adult boards might get a shot in the arm. For sure their activity would be up during the down time. You'd have the "Make Good" hassel with your advertisers. Don't know how your contracts read, but suspect the advertisers will want something.
Other downsides might be? Headaches of tech staff if something goes burp along the way.
Upsides would be less bitching about the search feature. Suspect you have a list of things to fix. The down time would give you the opportunity to go down your list...
Call it 48 hours so when you do it in 36, you look good. You know users will still find something to bitch about.
