legality of content used as thumb for trades

I see thousands of tgp using sponsors content in thumbs that only go to trades & I was wondering about the legality of this. I am considering using thumbs on my own tgp to send out to trades & have plenty of licensed content of my own, but the licensed content is restricted to certain domains & is of certain niche, so, this would only be effective to a certain extent.

Should I buy a small set of single images to use as thumbs for this purpose, or, for the licensed stuff I do have, if it is restricted to certain domains, if I host the image from that domain, but it is displayed on another domain, then is that a violation of the license terms? Even though it would be a cropped/cut image?

As far as the tgp using unlicensed images, how/why do they get away with it, or is everyone ok with that?
