Don't eat ANYTHING you catch off SoCal waters. Rule of thumb.

I usually go right off the shore too, or if I'm off the pier, right in the waves. Maybe about 2-3 feet of water tops. It's amazing the animals you can pull out of there. Caught a 6 foot shovel noise right out of the waves once.
