I feel for ya, that really sucks.
My dog just died last week, she was a 13 year old chocolate lab. She had really bad hip displasia since she was born (common in labs) and the vets said it would be so dibilitating by the time she was 3 or 4 she would have to be put under. But.. by keeping her on a very good diet and giving her lots of supplements she always managed to be as happy as any dog, and seemed to love life, she kept on going.
She just got to live a good life and die of old age though, and went peacefully in her sleep, so I miss her, but she got more than anyone expected so I cant be that sad about it.
This being so fresh I know what your going through. Sorry to hear that
