Ok guys, after being on 56k for the past 6 years I have finally found out in my area there is broadband access in the form of a WISP(wireless). It's a 1 meg up/1 meg down plan, and they are coming out monday to do an onsite survey. I need this connection (working on adult sites obviously), but would also like it to be 'up to par' with other forms of broadband as far as gaming goes.
Now I know some people with wireless are having excellent results in both pingtime and throughput, but that of course varies greatly depending on the ISP.
I was doing a bit of research on the ISP (nanomega.com) and started running some traceroutes from various places on the net and noticed some.. not so desirable results, and I was wondering if anyone here could give me their opinion.
When doing traceourtes i noticed the ping is generally extremely low up until the last 2 hops, and then it jumps up 50ms+ in pingtime (i am assuming this is when it reaches their network).
For instance, look at this (this is the lowest ping I have been able to find):
http://www.undergroundpalace.com/cgi...t=Submit+Query
The ping is 4MS!! Up until the last hop, where it jumps up to 50. Is this a sign that their network/router is extremely overloaded? 50ms in their network is a bit high is it not?
Here is another example:
http://www.ntplx.net/traceroute/?www.nanomega.com
The ping is 60ms till it reaches what I assume is their network and then it jumps to 120.
Another Example:
http://cgi.cs.wisc.edu/scripts/condo...w.nanomega.com
Ping is 45 till it reaches their network, then jumps to 90.
Now my question is this, should I assume that this connection will not be below 100 ping most of the time? I am a big gamer and for $135 a month (the connection charge) I really want to be able to get pings of 30-70 on servers near me (now I know all of them wont be that good), and from the pings it is looking as if that MAY be unlikely?
Do these pings mean anything? Is it possible they have their webserver(s) located on another part of their network, etc? Basically, is it worth worrying about the fact that the ping seems to jump by 50ms when it enters their network? Is there any other explanation besides a slow/poor quality/overloaded network for this?
I just don't know if the 135 a month is worth it if I won't have 'good gaming' along with the fast downloads, and am trying to make a decision, and seeing as how a ton of you here run your own ISPS I would like if you could give me your opinions on any data you can get from the traceroutes, etc.
Thank you!
