I don't know anything about the book you posted about, but at the very least it seems up to date (both php5 and mysql 5) so you will be getting current info. If you know nothing about programming a book is a good way to go verse learning online. Online docs will confuse and frustrate a newbie very quickly -- but if you have experience programming the opposite will happen the book will just slow you down.
As for the ASP debate, I think there are modules (older) that will let you run ASP/.NET on a linux machine... but why would you want to do that? Stick with PHP, RubyOnRails, or Django.
