Even if his father was a Roman Soldier (like some books say) he would still be pretty dark.

Early Christian Jews and Jews did not like each other. They both prosletyzed -- Jews stop converting people into the faith after the Christian faith became the official Roman religion. There was a lot of competition among the two.
You can see this in the New Testament, it was written to make the Jews seem anti-Roman. The Jews were portrayed to have been responsible for the killing of Christ although it was actually the Romans.
In response, the Jews labelled Jesus as a Roman bastard. Plus they also martyred many of the early Christian Jews [born Jews who became Christs' followers].
This tension played out all through European history as the Christians both hated but needed Jews. They hated them because they refused to accept Christ. But they also needed them, specially during the Dark Ages, because many Jews provided merchant, medical, legal, scientific services and other crucial skills.
