yeah, it's home now, fer sure. ever hear of a restaurant called nepenthe in big sur?
Nepenthe
The owner of a quaint sea-side cafe
caught sight of Joe who always Sundays came,
went over to the bustle by the door,
where all the hopeful Sunday diners were,
and made the usual sign to faithful Joe,
who never sought it out nor made a fuss
for waiting on that line with all the rest,
until his turn came up to go and sit.
"Hey, Joe..." he said, with his complicit wink.
"There's a party at the window table,
and all but done with their desserts. I think
it can be yours if you should want the view
today. It's rare to have a fogless dusk,
and on a Sunday when we may see you!"
Then Joe, embarrassed for the special in,
and for the eyes which sudden drew on him
those ears which sought to listen but not know
what powers of ownership conferred on Joe,
said to the man, but also for their sake:
"My thanks, old friend, but I can't rightly take
a table by a window with that view,
when there's so much to see, and days too few
to stare at faceless flotsams on the sea,
that only stir up ancient memories
I'd just as soon forget... On second thought...",
He paused and watched a change. "I will take it."
Joe went and took the offered table, then
he folded out the napkin on his lap,
just as the fog erased the line of surf,
the beach, a boy, his dog and all the land.
