Advantge of putin that people "hate/fear" him is his strong russian character which never goes w/o unpredicability. you never know what he might do next except he doesn't do complete imbecility.
Huge and wild Russia is tough to control, was tough during ussr times and during czars. What putin is trying to do is to build solid infrastructure in russian economy which was never done before.
