Patent law is all fucked up in the USA.
You can patent pretty much anything. However, the validity of the patent isn't determined until you take people to court to enforce it.
Unfortunately, that makes it a lawyer fight. He who has the most money for lawyers is gonna win.
You can have a totally valid patent and if you cant afford to go after people to enforce it, then it is worthless. Or as is the case with this guy, you can have a totally bullshit claim and go after guys you think do not have the money to fight it hoping they'll pay what you ask rather than go to court.
It can literally take years and tons of money to the lawyers to resolve one of these things in the court system.
