There is a fine line between confident and cocky. Being confident is an essential quality of the succesful, but blind cockyness causes poor judgement and the alienation of others. You should always try to treat others the way you would like to be treated, whether it benefits you or not.
This being said, there is also always a certain amount of hate towards those who are succesful whether they deserve it or not, its just human nature. I know I feel envy whenever I see a program blowing up. The trick is to turn it into a source of inspiration.
