Instead of tension, we actually have a huge amount of investments with China. US Direct foreign investment is in the billions. China is surpassing Japan as our biggest trade surplus partner. Corporate interests in China dictate a more liberal US approach to China.
In Israel, on the other hand, Christian fundamentalists along with the Israel lobby, keep the US on a definite pro-Israel stance. US foreign policy really is a mishmash of differing sectional groups. If these groups are in accordance, then that policy is pursued [policy re Israel] if they are pitted against each other, the more economically powerful interest prevails [policy re China, Nigeria, etc].
