What's the cause? There's no land left for anyone to grow flowers in the USA? Get on a plane in LA and fly to NY. 99% of everything in between in bare fucking ground. Go BUY a piece of land and plant whatever you want on it. This land belongs to a guy who wants to build on it. What is he supposed to do, give it to them for nothing? Would you give me your house so I could grow tomatoes in your bathroom? No. So why do they have "a cause". If they trying to protect some piece of nature, some wildlife sanctuary, or some other natural land or structure I'd say protest away. But this is a piece of land in the middle of a city where people have been planting gardens, because this guy allowed it to happen.
