I wouldn't say that PayPal is doomed - the main reason it is so successful is because it is embedded in eBay: you get an eBay account, and if you want to pay in real-time, they tell you (incessantly) that the most widely-accepted option is PayPal. Not to mention PayPal is integrated easily into every stage of the eBay transaction process, so although payment competitors with cheaper rates are available, people still use PayPal because it is much easier to do so when using eBay, and for some, because eBay use clever pieces of marketing to insinuate that all other payment options lead to fraud, PayPal will be the only method they use.
