XBOX 360 and PS3 are meant to be MORE than just a game console. Hell a blue-ray DVD player is over $1000 and for $600 you get one of those AND a next gen game console.
I remember paying $200 for a ColecoVison in 1982. And if you adjust for inflation Intellivison cost $800 in todays dollars when it first came out.
Also if you make a XBOX 360 that is the same as a PS3 it would cost you over $600. The Wi-fi is $100 extra the HD-DVD player is extra( not sure of the price, I'm sure it wil be at least $200 ) they XBOX 360 that comes with the HDD is $400. And that's only a 20 GB HDD. The premium PS3 comes with a 60 GB HDD.
And if you want to make your game saves portable you don't have to buy expensive memory cards like the XBOX 360. $40 for a 64 MB memory card? For $20 you can get a 256 MB USB flash drive and save your PS3 games on that.
