Emotional attachment to business assets is a big reason alot of people fail and/or don't get in or out of a certain market when they should.

Some people like their successes to live on as a "testament" to something they've built.. But if he didn't care, then why didn't he go for the bigger money.
Given the way this happened, it's more likely he needed cash bad and really fast so didn't care about anything at all. He could have got a lot more than what he ended up with and put the site in the hands of people that really know what they're doing.
