its not that simple, chances are he has a fast metabolism and 500 more calories a day wouldn't cut it. the body catches up after you gain a couple pounds then you need even more calories just to keep the same weight.
my advice, eat every 2-3 hours, either a meal or weight gain shake (can go with some crappy weight gain shake or a more quality meal replacement like met rx). i'm assuming you workout, so you'll want at least 20g of protein with each meal. 2 litres of milk a day minimum as well, which i would use mainly with the shakes.
